How to easily block porn from your child’s phone

The internet is still arguably the greatest invention of the 21st century. However, it also gives everyone -adults and children alike – easy access to anything across the globe: even sensitive information and adult content.

The most troubling part of this discovery is that, while all this is true, your child may not be looking for such content to stumble unto it.

Luckily, there are some ways to protect children from inappropriate online content through their mobile devices. Here’s how:

On iPhone or iPad (IOS)

    1. Open the iPhone or iPad’s settings. ‘Settings’ is a grey app whose icon is a gear ⚙️
    2. Scroll until you locate the ‘general’ tab, tap on it.
    3. Scroll and tap on ‘restrictions’. You may be prompted to type in a passcode if restrictions have already been enabled previously. Otherwise, select ‘enable restrictions’ and then create a passcode.
    4. Enter passcode if you have previously enabled restrictions
    5. Scroll to ‘websites’ and select it. It can easily be located in the ‘allowed content’ group of options.
    6. Then select the option close to the top of the page titled ‘Limit Adult Content’. Tap on it. A blue checkmark should appear. This would prevent the phone’s user from viewing adult sites on the default ‘safari’ browser.
    7. Save changes: Save the changes made by tapping the ‘back’ button, an arrow pointing left located at the top left corner of the screen.
You can also turn off the ‘installing apps’ switch by sliding it to the left. This would prevent the user from being able to download other browsers where they can be exposed to adult sites and inappropriate content.

On other tabs and phones (Android)

  1. Open the play store app. The Playstore app is a white app with a multi-coloured triangle on it.
  2. Tap on the 3 line menu button ( ☰ ) you will find in the top left corner of the screen.
  3. Tap on the ‘settings’ option near the bottom of the pop-out menu.
  4. Tap on ‘parental controls’. In the settings page and switch it on by sliding it to the right. It should turn green, confirming that parental controls have been enabled for the play store.
  5. You will be required to enter a four-digit pin and tap ‘OK’. This creates a pin for parental control settings on the phone so that they cannot be modified by the child without verification.
  6. Tap on a parental control option. You will find five groups (Apps & games, Films, TV, Magazines, and Music)
  7. Choose your preferred rating beneath ‘18A’ on the rating slider. Options range from ‘G’ (which is the most restrictive) to ‘Allow All’. Choose the setting appropriate for your child’s age. And tap on ‘Save.’
  8. Tap the ‘back’ arrow at the top left corner of the screen and repeat the process for each category. The device will no longer be able to download or access inappropriate content.

For Google Chrome

  1. To complete the process, open google chrome (an app with a yellow, green, red and blue circle).
  2. Tap on the three-dot menu button at the top right corner of the screen. Then select settings towards the bottom of the pop-out menu.
  3. Tap on ‘privacy’. Underneath the ‘advanced’ tab
  4. Tap on SafeSearch. To block explicit content on google searches. This means that the device will no longer display adult sites and inappropriate pages.

With adult content available for viewing and download on the internet, it is necessary to take preventative steps for your child’s safety.
